Client Handouts & InformationTexas Equine and Pet provides numerous internal medicine services. What is internal medicine? It is that part of veterinary practice that diagnoses and treats problems of a non-surgical nature. All veterinarians practice internal medicine during some part of their daily work. Dr. Criner diagnoses and treats respiratory problems, neurologic conditions, neonatal foal problems, skin conditions, and ophthalmic problems and lameness problems just to name a few. Equine Dentistry Floating is a procedure where the veterinarian utilizes a special file to smooth the sharp enamel points on the horse's teeth. One of the main problems that the horse can develop is infection of one of the teeth. A horse can develop a defect in a tooth due to trauma resulting in a fracture, uneven wear from lack of consistent care or as a result of a developmental problem. This defect allows food material into the tooth and surrounding gum with subsequent decay and infection. The infection and decay is not limited to the tooth, but can spread to the bone and sinus surrounding the area. The most commonly affected teeth are the upper premolars and molars also referred to as cheek teeth.
